国周のこの作品は本図を含め、「歌舞伎十八番 鳥居清忠／団菊左壱人立 豊原国周 芳年」のタイトルで折本仕立ての貼り込み帖に収められているものです。 この図は江戸時代中期初演の浄瑠璃作品のお話なのですが、ストーリーが面白くて、簡単に言うと親子の情愛をテーマとした作品です。 母親に抱きかかえられている童子は陰陽師で有名な安倍晴明です。 母親は葛の葉といって実は化け狐になります。 安倍晴明の父、葛の葉の夫は安倍保名（あべのやすな）と言い、この保名はなんと本物の葛の葉ではなく化けた葛の葉（狐）と結婚しこの安倍晴明を生みました。 なぜこの狐の葛の葉が保名の子を宿したかというと、説明すると長くなるので一言で保名に危機から助けられたからです。 保名もそうとは知らず結婚しその後狐の正体がバレてからは本物の葛の葉と添い遂げます。 本物の葛の葉も化け狐の子と知りながらも覚悟を決め育てます。 この図の場面は化け狐が口筆で保名に危機を伝える場面です。 【artist】Toyohara Kunichika 【title】Fox Kuzunoha 【date】Meiji,1888 【style】woodblock print 【condition】small stain 【story】 Kunichika was one of a pupil of Utagawa Kunisada. This work is drawn with the theme of Kabuki performances. Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro is in the role of Kazunoha who was actually a fox.
