鞘から刀を抜いた曽我五郎時致が、ホトトギスの鳴き声に気づき夜空を見上げている。「曽我物語」で知られる曽我兄弟、兄の十郎祐成と弟の五郎時致は幼い頃に父を工藤祐経に殺される。それから十八年後、父の仇を晴らすために、富士の裾野の狩場で工藤祐経の命を狙う。 図は、すっかり青年へと成長した五郎時致が、これから仇討ちに向かう場面。 青い着物には五郎時致であることを示す蝶の模様が染め抜かれている。 仇討の場面を描く際、土砂降りの雨が降っていることが多いが、芳年は一瞬雨が止んで雲間から三日月が姿を覗かせている状況を描くことで、これから積年の恨みを晴らそうとする五郎時致の緊迫した心理を表現している。 【artist】Tsukioka Yoshitoshi 【title】Mountain moon after rain - Tokimune, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon 【date】Meiji,1885 【style】woodblock print 【condition】good print, crease 【story】 When drawing the scene of the revenge, it is often raining, but Yoshitoshi will clear the long-standing resentment by drawing a situation where the rain stops for a moment and the crescent moon is peeping through the clouds.
